Welcome to Willow Wood!

I am thrilled to be teaching English/Language Arts at Willow Wood Junior High. This will be my twelfth year in education.  My first eight years were in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th grade--not all at one time.  For three years, I was the Reading Instructional Coach and Dyslexia Specialist at Oakcrest Intermediate School. I am extremely passionate about reading and writing, and my goal is to encourage your child to also develop a love of both so they become lifelong readers/writers.

From Texas A&M University, I have a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in both English and history. Additionally, I earned a Masters in Education from the University of Texas at Arlington in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Literacy Studies. I have a wonderful husband who is still in Cy-Fair ISD working as a Campus Content Instructional Specialist for History.  Together we have two wonderful children, Timothy (age 9) and Braeden (age 4).

My family is an avid watcher of all Chicago sports, especially the Cubs.  Go Cubs, Go! Additionally, despite the struggles of the last several season, we also continue to follow Da Bears.  This does not mean that I dislike the Astros/Texans.

I look forward to a wonderful year!

Spelling Bee

Welcome Spellers!

If your child is interested in participating in the Classroom Spelling Bee--with hopes of going on and participating in the Campus Spelling Bee--they need to sign up with me by November 5th so they can receive a study list.  Classroom Spelling Bees will be held on the week of the 12th; however, this is done in class without an audience.  If your child advances to the Campus Spelling Bee, parents are welcome to attend.

Grade Recovery

Parents and Students,

Just a reminder that if your child would like the opportunity to show mastery on the grade level TEKS we have covered in the 1st 9 weeks, they may opt to stay after school either Tuesday or Thursday to do a grade recovery test.  This opportunity is only for students who are below a 70 on a major grade. (For PAP, this excludes the summer reading assignment.)  Per grading guidelines, students must approach me and ask for this retest on their own.  I cannot take parent requests.  I will have a signup sheet in my room.  If your child does not request/sign up to take this assessment, they will not be allowed to stay after school.

Have a great weekend!

First Major Writing Grade and Checkpoint

Good evening!  This is just a reminder to let you know that your student's personal narratives will be completed this week and taken as a major writing grade.  Additionally, we will be taking our first reading checkpoint for a daily grade on Thursday, September 20th.

Reminder

Dear Parents and Students,

This is your reminder that materials (binder with 5 dividers and a composition notebook) are due by Friday.  I also sent home two sheets that need to be signed and returned by the end of the week.

In addition, if you are in Pre AP, your summer reading books need to be completely read by Friday.  Friday is the magic day.

It was great meeting everyone today.

Thank you,

Mrs. Yates
