Welcome New Band Members!
2019-2020 Northpointe and Oakcrest Intermediate Bands
Welcome NEW Northpointe and Oakcrest Band Members!
All 2019-2020 6th grade band members will need to attend one of two instrument placement meetings, held at Willow Wood JHS on the dates given below. At these meetings, information will be shared with students and parents, and music teachers will be there to guide new band members is selecting their instruments.
Do not select or make arrangements to rent or purchase an instrument until after you have attended a meeting or met with a band director (if not able to attend on one of the two nights). No student is placed in a band class at NIS or OIS until he or she has been placed on an instrument by a teacher.
Meeting dates are as follows (both take place in the cafeteria at Willow Wood JHS):
Monday, April 29, @ 6:00 PM (for those with last names A-L)
Tuesday, April 30, @ 6:00 PM (for those with last names M-Z)
The last name criteria given above is a guideline. If your meeting falls on a night for which you have a conflict, feel free to attend the other meeting. If you are unable to attend either meeting, then the band directors will arrange to pull your student during the school day at NIS or OIS. Be aware that some of our smaller instrumental sections (oboe, bassoon, saxophone, French horn, euphonium, tuba, and percussion) tend to fill up very quickly, and it is to your advantage to attend one of the evening meetings if you are interested in one of these instruments.
Students are encouraged to come with at least 2 or 3 possible instrument choices in mind. Attributes such as facial structure, size of hands, physical coordination, etc., can have a profound effect on a student's aptitude for a particular instrument. Our goal in meeting with you is to help you find the instrument on which you have the greatest potential for success.
Certain sections, such as oboe, bassoon, saxophone, French horn, euphonium, tuba, and percussion, do require that students designate an acceptable back-up choice. This allows us to hear everyone who attends a meeting and may be interested in those instruments before assigning class members. Many of these instruments are provided by the school, and we only have a limited number, while others must be limited in size so that those sections are not out of balance with the rest of the band.
All students who attend the placement meetings will receive final confirmation of their instrument assignment by Monday, May 6, possibly sooner. Many will leave their meeting knowing for sure what instrument they will be playing next year. We will provide information on rental and purchase of instrument and supplies, what brands and models are recommended, and more.
Instruments offered in the 6th grade include flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion. For video demonstrations of each instrument, go to the LINKS
page of this site, and select brass, woodwinds, or percussion from the drop down menu. Remember that each student should have 2-3 possible choices in mind. Teachers will also be able to guide you toward instruments upon which they think you could be successful.
We are looking forward to seeing you in late April! If you have questions, please contact Jim Shaw at firstname.lastname@example.org
2019-2020 Willow Wood Bands
We will begin the audition/placement process for next year's Willow Wood Bands following our Spring Concert on May 20. Students will be required to play an audition etude and their chromatic scale in class during that week. Recordings of the 7 required major scales (and any additional major scales for bonus points) will be due to Google Classroom by May 19.
Band members will receive more information in class. Band placement results will be posted on this website following the conclusion of the current school year.
If you are moving from another school or district
and will be participating in band at Willow Wood next year, please contact Mr. Shaw at email@example.com
and provide as much of the following information as you can.
- the student name and grade level for 2019-2020
- the name of the school and head band director from the school from which you are moving
- if known, what band "level" the student is coming from and/or would have been placed in for 2019-2020 (for example, 1st band, 2nd band, beginner, etc.).
Most incoming students are initially placed in one of our non-varsity bands. During the first week of school the student will be heard by a band director in order to determine final band "level" placement. The student is encouraged to prepare and be ready to play as much of the following as he or she is able:
- The chromatic scale (as much as the student is able to play)
- Major scales (as many as the student can play)
- A short prepared musical selection that best shows the student's playing ability (past audition music, a portion of a solo, a line or lines from a method book, something the student worked on in private lessons, etc.)
- Students may also be asked to sightread a brief musical selection
If you would like to complete your placement audition in advance of the coming school year by submitting a recording or video then contact Mr. Shaw at the email address given above. We are looking forward to having you in our program!!!
